Cosmic Education

Between the ages of 6 and 12, the child enters a remarkable new stage of development. The mind reaches beyond the immediate environment and begins to ask larger questions: How did the universe begin? Where did life come from? How did human beings develop? How do numbers and language help us understand and communicate our ideas?

Montessori Elementary responds to this emerging reasoning and imaginative mind through Cosmic Education—an approach that offers the child a vision of the world as an interconnected whole and then gives them the tools and freedom to explore it.

The Great Stories

The programme begins with a series of powerful stories that open the doors to further exploration: the Creation of the Universe, the Coming of Life, the Coming of Human Beings, the Story of Communication and the Story of Numbers.

These stories are not intended to provide all the answers. They awaken curiosity and imagination, giving children starting points from which they can ask questions, research, experiment and make discoveries of their own.

Rather than presenting knowledge as isolated subjects, the programme helps children see connections across history, geography, biology, language, mathematics, geometry, art and human culture.

From Imagination to Abstraction

The Elementary child has a powerful imagination and an increasingly strong reasoning mind. Concrete materials continue to provide a gateway to complex ideas, particularly in mathematics and geometry, allowing children to see and manipulate concepts before moving towards abstraction.

As their understanding develops, children increasingly use reasoning, imagination and previous knowledge to investigate more complex questions and build new layers of understanding.

Curiosity, Research & Intellectual Independence

Children are not simply given information to remember. They are guided towards questions worth exploring and are given the time, resources and freedom to follow their curiosity.

Research, discussion, experimentation, reading, writing and collaborative work allow one discovery to lead naturally to another. In this way, the programme seeks to keep curiosity alive while helping children become increasingly independent thinkers and learners.

An Interconnected World

At the heart of Cosmic Education is the understanding that everything has a place within a larger story.

Children explore the relationships between the universe, the Earth, living things and human beings. As their knowledge expands, they begin to understand not only how the world works, but also how human beings depend upon one another and upon the natural world.

This gradually invites a deeper question: What is my role within this world?

Growing as a Person

Intellectual development is only one part of Elementary education. Children at this age have strong social and moral interests. They question fairness, relationships, rules, responsibility and their place within a group.

Within a free but guided environment, children learn to collaborate, resolve difficulties, contribute to their community and take increasing responsibility for their choices and work.

Knowledge, personality, moral development and social understanding therefore grow together. The aim is not simply to help children know more, but to support them in becoming thoughtful, capable and responsible human beings.
